Design Meaning:

Eagle Mother

The mother eagle design shows the Mother holding on to her babies close to her heart. The Salmon in her wings are to provide the necessities (language/culture/spirit/family/home) for a healthy life.

The inverted maple leaf represents Canada’s role in taking the children away from their families and forcing them into residential schools.

In the design you see the maple leaf attached to the eaglets wings leading them away from the grasp of their mother.

About the artist:

Jared Deck is from the Tzeachten ( Chi’iyaqtel ) First Nation within the Stó:lō Territory.

Jared is a self-taught artist in the west Coast Salish art style and considers his artwork to be very contemporary with traditional elements.
